Conference "Building a Resilient Infrastructure" in Addis Ababa
Exciting conference days at the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC).
From February 26th to March 2nd, 2024, the joint conference "Building a Resilient Infrastructure (BRI) - Towards Sustainable Urban Transition" took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This event was organized by the Addis Ababa University - Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EiABC) and the Bauhaus University Weimar.
The conference offered a wide range of activities, including workshops, a PhD colloquium, site visits, and meetings with local companies. Under the theme "Building a Resilient Infrastructure (BRI) - Towards Sustainable Urban Transition," the focus was on the challenges and solutions in the field of sustainable urban development.
The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism was represented by the Chair of Informatik in der Architektur (Vertr.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven Schneider and Dr.-Ing. Martin Bielik, Dipl.-Ing. Philippe Schmidt and Karina Mendoza) and the Juniorprofessur Konstruktives Entwerfen und Erproben (Jun.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Tim Simon-Meyer and Julius Tischler).The Department of Construction Engineering and Management, represented by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Melzner and Prof. Dr. Hans-Joachim Bargstädt, contributed two presentations to the conference. Their expertise enriched the discussions and helped develop innovative approaches for a more resilient infrastructure.
Overall, the conference served as a significant forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas in the field of sustainable urban development. Through various activities and close collaboration between the participating institutions, important impulses were provided for a resilient infrastructure that will drive sustainable urban transformation.
Since 2008 the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism is having an intense partnership with Addis Abeba Universität in the frame of the »Emerging City Lab« (ECL-AA). Das ECL-AA was founded in 2015 by the bauhaus institut for experimental building (bauhaus.ifex). This partnership has enabled joint work on solutions for the urban challenges of tomorrow while establishing sustainable infrastructure. The ongoing project is named INUMO (Integrated Urban Mobility – Digital Methods for Interactive Scenario Development of Sustainable Traffic Infrastructure for Emerging Cities in Ethiopia).
