The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to Exhibit Two Projects for Bach-Biennale 2023’s BaBa-Fest
The »Barockfest« forms the highlight of this year’s Bach-Biennale. Short for »Bach and Bauhaus«, the »BaBa-Fest« will mark 100 years since the first Bauhaus exhibition that was held in Weimar back in 1923. The inspiration that can be drawn from the music and art of J.S. Bach and his time will be explored, along with what the projects and manifestos of the Bauhaus movement of 1923 still tell us today. The festival artists will come together with students from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar as well as the universities of music in Weimar, Trossingen and Freiburg and other universities at the Weimar Schießhaus on 8 July 2023 for joint creations. From 5 pm, a space will be provided for spontaneous, creative and young art during the »Mosaiksteinen« [»Mosaic Stones«] event.
»ein hexentanz« (Witch Dance)
One of the projects taking place in cooperation with the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar together with the dancer Nannette Banisch is performance of a reconstruction of Mary Wigman’s »Hexentanz« (Witch Dance) from 1926. The dance was developed in collaboration with the dancer Katharine Sehnert, who actually trained with Wigman. The preserved yet incomplete recording from 1926 served as the basis for revival of the choreography, whereby additional research was also conducted. Mary Wigman’s »Hexentanz« (Witch Dance) also forms the starting point for dance miniatures by students of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar that they developed in collaboration with students from the Liszt School of Music Weimar. The »Hexentanz« (Witch Dance) project is fragment 3 in the series of productions by the bauhaus.media.stage laboratory and is being led by Dr. Simon Frisch, who is Vice President for Studies and Teaching and a lecturer for film and media studies within the Faculty of Media. Dance and studies, research and performance intertwine within the semester project. The students also engaged in an intense exploration of the figure of the witch, who encourages them to question their own supposed identity and the supposed order of the world. The »Hexentanz« (Witch Dance) project is an exploration in many senses; it opens up perspectives for thought in motion and for reflection on norms, identities and transformations.
»Kommunikationsverstärker« (Communication Amplifiers)
The second project in the BaBa-Fest cooperation is »Kommunikationsverstärker« (Communication Amplifiers), led by Dr. Luise Nerlich and Prof. Bernd Rudolf from the Department of Building Morphology. The »Kommunikationsverstärker« (Communication Amplifiers) are elements made of wood that have been set up in various locations and can serve as an orientation system, information source or also seating. During the BaBa-Fest, the functional modular building blocks will be trialled for the first time as an installation from Thursday, 6 July to Sunday, 9 July. After this time, the 13 elements will be moved to the Park an der Ilm and form part of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s »summaery2023« annual exhibition. As seating, the microarchitecture is intended to support the dialogue between different groups of people in open spaces in Weimar. At the same time, they symbolise the dialogue between the present-day Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Haus Am Horn, which was built in 1923 by Bauhaus students – the project name of »Kommunikationsverstärker« (Communication Amplifiers) also makes reference to this.
