University library tests markings to prevent bird collisions

»We opted for a grid of metallic dots with a diameter of nine millimetres, as it increases visibility for birds and reduces reflections while also keeping the degree of coverage of the panes low. This tested and highly effective bird protection marking was chosen with the help of recommendations and scientific findings of the Swiss Ornithological Institute in Sempach,« explains Christina Kleffel, Building Officer at the University Library.

Moving forward, the test surfaces will be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the markings directly on the building and to assess their impact on the architectural design of the building’s exterior and interior.

Before the test phase, there was a thorough selection process: Following a high number of bird collisions in March 2022, employees were notified and bird-friendly measures were implemented, including lengthening of the glass cleaning interval. Between 1 April 2022 and 31 January 2023, the university library’s glass surfaces were also subject to separate monitoring. The elevated need for implementing changes to the windows became increasingly evident.

This year, the test phase will be assessed to help determine whether to expand the scope of the test surfaces.
