Shower of prizes for the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar at the renowned ADC Talents Award 2023

A total of seven prizes were awarded to student work from the Faculty of Art and Design at this year's Art Directors Club (ADC) Young Talent Competition: two of the prestigious gold and bronze nails each and three awards went to Bauhaus students. Simon Geistlinger was particularly successful with his final project »Uns wird schon was einfallen« (We'll come up with something). He scored in three categories and took home two of the golden nails.

In both the »Concept > Design of Spatial Experiences« and »Experimental/Artistic Design« categories, the jurors awarded the Master's thesis in the »Visual Communication« degree programme a golden nail. An award was added in the category »Motion Design«. In his thesis, Geistlinger tackled the problem of technological optimism in the context of climate change.

»There are countless concepts that promise a better future and fuel the hope that a technical solution can be found for every problem,« says Geistlinger. »Uncritical trust in technologies, however, risks neglecting other crucial climate protection measures. To mirror the deceptive and tempting faith in technology, I have conceived six absurd and satirical inventions that seemingly eliminate the causes and consequences of the climate crisis in the blink of an eye.« The work, which consists of the six objects, their multimedia staging and contextualisation with climate facts, was on display in an exhibition in October 2022. The following case video explains the concept.

For their animated film »O dys See«, the media artists Elisabeth and Benjamin Geyer were honoured with a bronze nail in the category »Film / Animation«. The animated music video for the song »ERMO« by the band Benshi is a maritime thriller based on the fairy tale »Undine« by Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué. The artist duo created a moving painting from over 1800 individual frames created with tempera paint, acrylic chalk and coloured pencils, which leaves a lasting impression on the viewer. The student team of »PORT 2022« also received a bronze nail - in the category »Editorial Products«. Lea Ansorg, Haron Barashed and Elise Felicitas Weiland dedicated their issue of the inter-faculty student magazine »PORT 2022 - the FUN issue« to the question of where the fun in life has gone in the pandemic between study stress, deadlines and remote teaching. The 144-page magazine in green, yellow, black and white presents student projects of various kinds to highlight the special value of experimentation, unconventional approaches, perspectives and playful interaction for the creation of extraordinary results.

Nina Buschendorf and Ming YI were awarded a prize for their semester project »Vielfaltigkeit« (Diversity). Under the briefing »The Chaotic Book«, the two students developed an extraordinary book dealing with the problem of different translations in a biblical context. Based on the »Lord's Prayer«, a chaotic book in the shape of a cross was created that makes it possible to combine the pages with different translation variants over and over again, thus creating changing versions of the prayer. You can watch a demonstration in the video.

The illustration podcast »Kritzelkiste« (Scribble Box) by Hannes Naumann also received an award. In the interview with illustrators, Naumann talks not only about the work, techniques and inspirations, but also about the hurdles one encounters in the industry and the topic of money. A special feature of the format is the »Plot Twist«, a mysterious box that plays an interesting role in the conversations. Inside were quirky objects related to the guest's work or life that were threaded into the dialogue.
