Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism Opens its Doors at End of Semester
At the end of the 2023/24 winter semester, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is inviting interested parties to attend its »go4spring« semester exhibition. In and around the Main Building from 8 to 11 February 2024, students will be shining a spotlight on their semester projects.
The semester exhibition offers an overview of various degree programmes and semesters; it exemplifies the diversity of studies within the Faculty. Designs, ideas and concepts encompassing a broad spectrum of application areas will be on display. In addition to current architectural, urban and landscape planning issues, many of the exhibited works also address questions of a socio-political nature.
The seminar »Sorge um den Bestand« (The scarcity concern), for example, includes unexpected perspectives on the controversial yet popular form of housing currently lived in by more than half of Germany’s population: the detached house. Students provide answers to questions such as, »How can the stock of detached houses be adapted to suit a variety of lifestyles?« or »What are the prospects for sustainable use of the substantial material resources involved in such housing?«.
What would architecture look like if all environmental conditions existed only in their extreme forms and buildings were constantly exposed to extreme temperatures, earthquakes, storms, the harshness of nature, rainfall and flooding? In »Beyond Horizon«, students confront this scenario and design living spaces on fictitious islands that are adapted to specific conditions and protect both buildings and users from damage under such conditions.
In the »Hello my cosmic friend« design studio, students use the example of an unfinished building shell from the 1970s in Milchhofstraße as an opportunity to ponder communal forms of housing in a mixed and industrially influenced neighbourhood in Weimar. As construction progresses, key considerations include appropriate handling of the existing building, questions concerning resources and materials, development of spatial potential for living and working and, importantly, the search for an expression of contemporary residential architecture.
Participants in the »flußwärts StadtLand« are cooperatively seeking sustainable strategies for the river areas in the Saxon-Thuringian Vogtland region in order to provide new developmental momentum for the StadtLand as the meeting point between urban and rural living. In this connection, questions such as how to deal with built resources and the greater consideration of remodelling and maintenance strategies in architecture are addressed. Also pertinent, however, are ecological aspects in dealing with sensitive river areas and the relationship not only between industrial architecture and landscapes but also between humans and nature.
Central to the seminar »Revanchismus inmitten des Klimawandels« (Revanchism in the midst of climate change) is Budapest’s climate strategy for the socio-ecological transformation of the city and the obstacles to implementation thereof due to the illiberal democracy prevailing in Hungary. The importance of democracy for planning resilient and sustainable cities will also be discussed.
The »Planning is Caring« seminar explores how urban planning can be rethought or reimagined from the perspective of caring. Planning concepts such as public services and provisions, infrastructure and city compactness are important in this connection, but so are plan-related areas of action, for example housing, local supply and open spaces.
A total of 20 professorships with over 30 projects are taking part in the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism semester exhibition.
The »go4spring« exhibition opens on Thursday, 8 February 2024 at 5 pm and offers the opportunity to explore the results of the winter semester, exchange ideas with students and lecturers and round off the semester with music in the Main Building. The exhibition will also be open to interested parties on the subsequent days.
