21.1. De-Biennalize @ iRRE SPACE
On Tuesday, 21 January 2025, 7 pm, the participants of the »De-Biennalize« module will present their artistic explorations of the topic of »biennalisation« in the student-organised exhibition space »iRRE SAPCE«. Potatoes and beer may be served. Anyone interested is cordially invited!
The format of the biennial and large-scale exhibitions has led to increasingly controversial discussions in recent years - too big, too expensive, too unecological. Nevertheless, well-known formats such as those in Venice, Sao Paulo or the Documenta retain their important place on the compass of contemporary art. Are these mega-shows simply too established or »too big to fail«? At the same time, like museums, they have become popular stages for political debates. So what is so fascinating about this format?
In the course, the students examined the format of the biennale and large-scale exhibition together. They travelled to Venice to explore the mechanisms of this oldest international exhibition format on site. They analysed historical and contemporary artistic and curatorial positions. The aim was to find out whether and how these mechanisms can be transferred to regional contexts. The results are now being presented at »iRRE SPACE«.
