Freie Hansestadt Bremen - Der Senator für Umwelt, Bau und Verkehr
Climate change has become a tangible danger in recent years. This is especially pressing in urban environments, where multiple functions come together in a relatively limited space and effects tend to be extraordinarily devastating. Whilst Western Europe is affected only moderately on a global scale, a relatively great range of measures and resources for adaption and mitigation can be made available. Nevertheless, it has turned out that building greater urban resilience is a complex, long-term process in which proven, tried and tested instruments sometimes have to be re-thought and re-negotiated.
The eastern districts of the city of Bremen are a worthwile area of focus for their natural and man-made features, such as a high groundwater level, vast industrial areas and a relatively tense microclimate. In this part of Bremen, we tried to make prevention against flooding and adaption to climate change a part of an integrated urban development. On both a conceptual and a design-based level, we developed a blue and green network, which opens the district up to the local river, links up green spaces and most importantly establishes greater climate resilience. In several areas, we zoomed into the urban fabric to further develop and illustrate situations where several functions come together on a more detailed level.
