Project description

In current practice in conventional seismic design, acceptable performance of a structure consists in providing the lateral force resisting system with the capacity of dissipating energy in a stable manner, for a large number of cycles, with damage in the structure, preventing collapse and ensuring life safety. In order to avoid damage, earthquake protective systems can be incorporated in the structure. Supplemental energy dissipation devices, termed as “dampers”, can serve this purpose. Passive devices are the focus of this project. The most commonly used for structures’ seismic protection are viscous fluid dampers, viscoelastic solid dampers, metallic dampers and friction dampers. These four are reviewed in this project.

The bibliographic review on passive dissipating devices is focused in four devices types, which were selected according its relevance. An introductory explanation is provided by explaining for each type of device three key points: working principle, developing history and model for describing behavior. Next step was to elaborate an experimental evaluation catalogue with the most relevant dampers experiments in buildings, as well as a catalogue of application examples. Based on these three sections, a comparison is draw. The final part of the project is about design considerations for buildings with passive dampers. This includes codes requirements, current practice and state of the art of latest investigation. Lastly conclusions are presented.
