Sustainability, Political Participation, Silent Films from 100 Years Ago: Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Joins in for Kunstfest Weimar 2022

Thuringia’s largest contemporary art festival, Kunstfest Weimar, has begun and invites guests to experience art, film, music, theatre, drama and dance events and much more until 10 September 2022. Cooperative projects from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar are also part of the event.

Two projects in particular address the topic of sustainability. Students from the »Public Art and New Artistic Strategies« MFA programme in the Faculty of Art and Design hope to tackle the pressing issue of waste in a new way with their interactive sculpture project. Together with interested citizens, the students will be creating the »Trashquestra«: a trash sound lab.

»Trashquestra« - Students and Citizens Creating Music with Waste Products

The goal of the project is to construct musical instruments exclusively from discarded materials and to engage participants at Theaterplatz in a sort of musical ensemble. Participants will be tasked beforehand with collecting rubbish. The workshop starts on 26 August at 2 pm at Theaterplatz. Entrance is free of charge. Experts from the University Discuss Material Cycles of Sustainable Innovations

The »Stuff – neue Materialzyklen im Theater« Open Source project by Barbara Ehnes and Nadia Fistarol, stage designers and professors at the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden (Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden) and Zurich University of the Arts (Zurich Hochschule der Künste), asks the question of whether sustainability can act as a driving force for innovation. The discussion addresses how sustainable innovations can be popularised and implemented in both the theatre word and other areas of life One particularly interesting factor is that people tend to be reluctant to embrace sustainable alternatives. After all, numerous innovative materials and methods are available as alternatives to what is currently being used.

A subsequent session will give participants the opportunity to discuss this topic with an expert from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, an innovation researcher and a workshop leader.  Find out more here: https://www.kunstfest-weimar.de/programm?tx_jokunstfest_pi5%5bcontroller%5d=Elements&tx_jokunstfest_pi5%5bjoDetailUid%5d=701&tx_jokunstfest_pi5%5bjoDetailView%5d=1&tx_jokunstfest_pi5%5bjoModeOverride%5d=1&cHash=f94f2dd9c50d5b8efb068f6fa665eb73

Schorsch Kamerun and Experimental Radio Students Take Over Theaterplatz

Exclusion and Participation, Democracy and Poetry, War and Annexation Returning Autocracy vs. Future-Oriented Participation Who has the right to say what to whom, and using which tools? »Extra Unruhig«, an Experimental Radio student collective, is taking over Theaterplatz together with singer and theatre producer Schorsch Kamerun to artistically pose general questions about participation and empathy. The questions are asked with a particular focus on exclusionary simplification in increasingly fragile participatory activities in the face of growing social division and fear-based opinions.

With their intervention, titled »Nervös«, the group hopes to develop creative content and formats in public spaces in order to intentionally point out alternative concepts as well as types of involvement and participation. The début is scheduled to take place on 30 August at 7 pm at Theaterplatz. Entrance is free of charge. Cinematic Treasures: Media Researchers Present Silent Film Programme Set to Live Music

Silent film lovers will once again get their money’s worth this year: The 4th »Weimarer Stummfilm-Retrospektive« together with the Media Studies Department and the University Library will be screening a selection of silent films from 29 August to 8 Septemeber. Over the course of ten evenings, 14 films will be screened in the »Lichthaus-Kino« and the »Redoute des Deutschen Nationaltheaters Weimar«. The films wil also showcase the artistic ambitions, economic opportunities and state regulations from the year 1922. All films will be screened with historical newsreels - as was customary at the time - and in some cases with supporting films. The films will be set to live music performed by internationally renowned silent film musicians.
