»SPACE, ACTIVATE!« – Exhibition of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Gallery at Kunsthaus Erfurt.
On 27 April 2022, the first of a total of four exhibitions will open at Kunsthaus Erfurt, the temporary exhibition spaces of the »NOVA art space«. The group exhibition »SPACE, ACTIVATE!«, which relates works by students and alumni of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to three renowned international positions, will kick off the exhibition. It is dedicated to performative and collaborative practices and focuses on artistic works that literally activate and charge the newly acquired spaces with energy by means of performances and actions.
The starting point for the exhibition is Bruce Nauman's work »Body Pressure / Körperdruck« (1974), which invites and instructs visitors to enter into contact with the space itself in a performative act. Based on this experience, »SPACE, ACTIVATE!« shows cross-media works in which the artists deal with aspects and potentials of interaction. On the one hand, these can arise in interaction with collaborators, but on the other hand they can also be the result of unexpected encounters with strangers or even depend decisively on them.
Other works pose the question of where, in which spaces and under which conditions interaction can take place at all. What is the nature of access to these spaces? And how are dynamics and hierarchies between people subject to perpetual change?
The visitors, meanwhile, are not just passive audiences, but through their presence, their actions and their attention, they become active actors and thus an integral part of the exhibition. Likewise, the set-up of the works is not fixed, but subject to constant adjustments and changes during the runtime until 10 June 2022.
The exhibition will be flanked by an accompanying programme to which all interested parties are cordially invited.
