Institute Director: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Carsten Könke

Welcome to the Institute of Structural Mechanics (ISM)

The institute undertakes the task of training the students enrolled in the courses at the faculty of civil and environmental engineering. The ISM lectures and seminars focus mainly on the following subjects:

Statics and dynamics of structures
Structural and topology optimization
FEM and numerical simulation methods with application in civil engineering.

The institute currently houses the following chairs:
Chair of Structural Analysis and Component Strength  (Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Carsten Könke)
Chair of Optimization and Stochastics  (Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Tom Lahmer)
Chair of Computational Mechanics  (Prof. Dr.-Ing. Timon Rabczuk)
Chair of Mechanics of Engineering Materials  (Jun.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Luise Göbel)

The chairs plan out the ISM syllabus and research areas primarily.
