numgeo Workshop at the Chair of Geotechnics (Weimar, 2025)

Geotechnics at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

The Chair of Geotechnics is part of the Institute of Structural Engineering within the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The focus is on the numerical modelling of complex geotechnical processes and their integration into engineering practice.

Our research projects focus on current geotechnical questions like e.g. the maintenance of infrastructure, soil improvement techniques, offshore geotechnics, and soil-structure interaction under seismic loading. The chair of geotechnics develops and applies advanced finite element methods, constitutive models, contact mechanics and coupled finite element formulations. Of particular importance is the finite element program numgeo, co-developed at our chair, which forms a substantial base of our scientific work. Additionally, the chair possesses a well-equipped geotechnical laboratory.

In the context of teaching, the emphasis is on imparting fundamental methodological skills and engineering practical abilities in the field of geotechnics within the bachelor´s and master´s programmes of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This includes areas such as soil mechanics, foundation engineering, numerical geotechnics, rock and tunnel engineering and environmental geotechnics. Theses provide students with the opportunity to engage with current research topics and independently address scientific questions.
