Prizes and Awards

Während der Immatrikulationsfeier am 12. Oktober 2023 wurden nicht nur die neuen Studierenden begrüßt, sondern auch vier Studierende, drei Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen und eine Nachwuchskünstlerin für ihre hervorragenden wissenschaftlichen bzw. künstlerisch-gestalterischen Arbeiten mit den Hochschulpreisen der Bauhaus-Universität Weimar ausgezeichnet. Universitätspräsident Prof. Peter Benz ehrte die Preisträger*innen aller vier Fakultäten vor Ort und in der Ferne.

With their joint Bachelor’s thesis on a type of low-emission biocement entitled »The Essence of Biocement«, the two Produktdesign (Product Design) alumni of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar have reached the international selection round of the renowned James Dyson Award as runners-up in the Germany-wide competition. Each year, the competition calls on innovative students and recent graduates of product and industrial design and engineering degree programs worldwide to submit pioneering projects.

Beatriz Oria Lombardía’s Master's thesis, »(non-)local lab«, received an award at this year’s German Design Graduates »Dare to Design« show at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar graduate won over the jury in the category of »Research and Transfer« with her interactive knowledge transfer based project dedicated to addressing the issue and potential of invasive plant species in Thuringia. The award comes with a 2,500 euro prize.

Fine Art graduate Felix Deiters was awarded the Lyonel Art Prize 2023 on Friday, 14 July 2023. A top-class jury had selected his thesis from a total of three nominated works for the Lyonel Verein zur Förderung von Kunst, Gestaltung und Kultur (Lyonel Association for the Promotion of Art, Design and Culture; Lyonel e.V.) Young Talent Award, which is endowed with 2,000 euros.

A total of seven prizes were awarded to student work from the Faculty of Art and Design at this year's Art Directors Club (ADC) Young Talent Competition: two of the prestigious gold and bronze nails each and three awards went to Bauhaus students. Simon Geistlinger was particularly successful with his final project »Uns wird schon was einfallen« (We'll come up with something). He scored in three categories and took home two of the golden nails.

Beim diesjährigen Deutschen Kinder Medien Festival »Goldener Spatz« erhält Anika Mätzke, Alumna Medienkunst/Mediengestaltung, in der Kategorie »Bestes Drehbuch« den Kindermedienpreis des MDR Rundfunkrates für ihren Beitrag »Jonja«.

Lena Vogel was honoured during the »3D Pioneers Challenge« in Erfurt for her master’s dissertation project entitled »algae«, which she completed as part of the product design study programme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The designer used a 3D-printed sculpture made of clay to explore new ways to cultivate microalgae.

Als »Best of Best« der Newcomer kürte der Rat für Formgebung am 17. April 2023 die Produktdesign-Alumni Julia Huhnholz und Friedrich Gerlach für ihre Abschlussarbeit »The Essence of Biocement«.

With their joint bachelor's thesis on a biocement that can be produced without emissions, Julia Huhnholz and Friedrich Gerlach convinced the jury of the international competition for young designers »one&twenty« (formerly »ein&zwanzig«). As one of 21 award-winning works, the design duo prevailed against 545 entries from 134 universities in 53 countries. Also nominated for the shortlist were Esther Betz and Mara Kossira for their innovative clothes horse »MAÏMA.«.

Der Beitrag »KON TAKT ZONE« des interdisziplinären Teams »green noise« mit den Professorinnen Ursula Damm (Fakultät Kunst und Gestaltung) und Sigrun Langner (Fakultät Architektur und Urbanistik) mit ihrem Büro Station C23 wurde von der Jury als einer von drei gleichrangigen Siegerentwürfen ausgezeichnet. Den Gestaltungswettbewerb für Schallschutzwände hatte die Stadt Düsseldorf gemeinsam mit der Deutschen Bahn ausgelobt.
