short description:
This semester we make time for your works in progress: projects, sketches and ideas. The course will be a space for exercises, trials and errors. We’re taking a brief look into positions in performance art history with a focus on rehearsal as a practice. We want to find out, how the process of "In-the-Making" can be a productive way of exploring one's own work by repeating, maybe failing and repeating again.
Along the way, we cannot get round the question of how "In-the-making" can be distinguished from a „Making-of". Not only when we look at historical performances through archive material such as photos and video works today, also the artists themselves have been confronted with questions of documenting their works since the beginnings of performance art. Some of them even use documentation techniques as integral parts of their practice. How can artifacts, documents, fragments of a live action, such as a performance, convey the past event? Doesn't this materialization also add new layers of narration? We want to playfully investigate, how we can use documentation strategies as tools of observation even story telling.
For the final exercise, the IRRE Space Weimar was transformed into Studio 14 for 14 days, which was used daily by an artist or group of artists, with the key being passed on the following day. Only one document or relic of the work remained in the space, reference to previous works was optional and the order of participants was randomly determined.
