Research Demonstrator on Campus

As part of the research project “Design for the Anthropocene,” a 1:1-scale demonstrator for summaery2026 was realized on the main campus of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. It consists of ten concrete modules, featuring a parametrically designed minimal-surface geometry. The approach leverages the latent properties of reclaimed concrete. Here, partially unhydrated cement material can be reactivated, allowing reclaimed concrete to be used both as recycled aggregate and as a binder substitute. At the same time, the demonstrator's design is based on a gradient system in which both geometry and material configurations are adapted to the specific structural requirements — or, in other words: material is thus used precisely where it is actually needed from a design, functional, and structural perspective. The reversible structure, braced exclusively with steel cables, can be completely dismantled and reused.

The demonstrator can be viewed on site through the end of November.

The project was developed in close collaboration with the Chair of Emerging Technologies and Design (Jun.-Prof. Dr. Thomas Pearce) and the Chair of Mechanics of Engineering Materials (Jun.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Luise Göbel), as well as with the F. A. Finger-Institute for Building Materials Science. Additionally, the project was kindly supported by the Experimental Workshops of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.
