Project description

The designed nature of the Ilmpark was made more than 200 years ago. Today, the park belongs to the UNESCO world heritage and therefore has strikt conservation guidelines.

Talking to gardeners of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar revealed one main conflict. The park should be conservated in it’s original status. Still, the vegetation is old and fragile now and endangered through the climate change. This makes the park maintenance a big challenge.

The two influencing factors age and climate can be also found in annual rings of trees. In analogy to that, the project “annual rings” reflects about the history, present and future of the Ilmpark in the context of climate change. The project aims to inform the the park visitor about the current condition of the park and to sensitize for possible changes.

This is done with a multimedial walk starting from the “Sternbrücke” at the castle until the end of the “Stern” avenue. The used technology is augmented reality. The interface can be accessed with a smartphone or tablet by scanning a QR-code at the starting point. Audio, image, and video material leads the visitor and puts a new information layer on the actual background of the park.
At the end of the “Stern” avenue the “curtain” to the wide park landscape opens. As a final information layer of the project, an ongoing visualisation about critical weather data for the trees in Ilmpark is revealed. Over the time, this will make the subtle climate change visible.
