Project description

How should planners act in transformative processes that are evoking a right-wing populist reaction?

A recurring theme in our studies is thinking about the political implications of spatial planning: we constantly observe political developments and are confronted with the results of (local) political decisions at our university, in Weimar and in Thuringia. However, we usually approach the issues that are being discussed in public – such as the climate catastrophe, right-wing extremism or, particularly relevant for this project, (right-wing) populism – initially as (politically active) citizens and only then as planners. We have therefore changed our perspective in this semester project and ask explicitly as planners: What effects do political and social conflicts have on planning? These questions are the starting points for questioning our profession. Our case study is the Strukturwandel in Lusatia, which we analyse to learn more about our profession.

Our project work is documented online at lausitz.bau-ha.us. There you can find a short summary of our analysis based on literature research and interviews, but more important, four essays on different political/planning topics as a project result.
