Tokyo Research Project

Tokyo Research Project

This teaching research project is founded on a presumed close connection between design and research methods for which the compilation, assessment and application of shared knowledge inform the design concepts for independent projects, their implementation and presentation. The assignment is based on the consideration of research approaches practiced at Japanese universities and architecture schools and current contributions to residential architecture in Japan. The project is organised around several interrelated teaching and research formats and contains a seminar in Weimar, an excursion to Japan, including a workshop in Tokyo, and is followed by a design studio module. The project is initially aimed at students on the M.Sc. Architecture course. Students on the B.Sc. Architecturecourse and other courses are also welcome, provided they meet certain criteria. It is particularly aimed at students who are working on a thesis related to this teaching research project or students who wish to prepare a topic for their dissertations.

Participation in the studio, which addresses forms of shared living on the periphery of Berlin, requires regular preparation and follow-up work in addition to active participation in three joint colloquia. Students wishing to enrol on the design studio must have taken the seminar and attended the respective excursion beforehand.
