The Studio Building (a Typology)
If architecture cannot only influence, define or determine but also facilitate, not only discipline and control, but also liberate, we should ask ourselves: where, how and with whom do we want to live? Which type of housing do we want for which stage of life? Or is there a better alternative to housing?
Ludger Schwarte, Revolutionen des Wohnens, in: ARCH+ 244 – Wien. Das Ende des Wohnbaus (als Typologie)
The design studio is seeking appropriate typologies for sustainable architecture that have no preconceived function in a neighbourhood in the centre of Berlin. This continues the overarching issue of forms of living and working. Our assumption of what a studio building could be and our cooperation with a state-owned housing association provide the conditions for an economic, fair and low-threshold programme with a view to an urban and mixed neighbourhood. The framework conditions for subsidised housing are examined in terms of their applicability to the typology of studio buildings. We will study different types of studios and search for interpretations of enhanced forms of living. The design studio is aimed at students who wish to explore the subject of social and spatial sustainability in residential architecture and contribute work to this. It includes an excursion to Berlin lasting several days, which will look at typological approaches to studio buildings and promote the exchange among students. A seminar held in collaboration with Sebastian Schröter will accompany the programme, in which the designs are to be developed with possible sustainability measures in mind. The seminar is an integral part of the design studio and is aimed at students on both B.Sc. and M.Sc. Architecture courses. Requirements for attending the design studio are the willingness to work intensively in the studio and experiment with drawing, model making, photography and other suitable presentation techniques.
