Arrival and Orientation

You are accepted for one or more courses of the Bauhaus Summer School and "ready to go"? Wonderful! In the following, we will give you a few tips on how to get to Weimar and your first steps here.

In order to be ideally prepared for your stay in our beautiful cultural and university city, we will send you a "final information"  before the course starts. You will find a summary of all important information for the start of the course here:

Pre-arrival Checklist:

  • Obtain visa (if needed)
  • Buy health and home insurance (if needed)
  • Notify the Bauhaus Summer School team (summerschool@uni-weimar.de) in case you will be arriving outside the official arrival times
  • Join the WhatsApp-group for Summer School (link will be send via email)
  • register for our social activities
  • Get packed: don’t forget your travel documents, clothes (for warm and cold weather), adapter (if needed)

Arrival days of Bauhaus Summer School 2026 are August 2 (DAAD scholarship holders, German course), August 5 (German course) and August 15 (specialized courses). We will be welcoming you from 3.00 pm to 8:00 pm in the entrance hall of Weimar central station. At our welcome desk, you will receive your welcome bag as well as all information you need for a succesful start in Weimar.  

 

Welcome to the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar! We invite you and all lecturers to the opening day of the Bauhaus Summer School. Get to know your fellow students and discover the city of Weimar together during the City Rallye.
In the evening, it will be festive: representatives of the city and the university will officially welcome you in Weimar. Afterwards, you are invited to get in the mood for Summer School by enjoying good music and delicious food.

TRAVELLING TO WEIMAR

By plane
If you're traveling by plane, it's best to fly to Berlin, Frankfurt, Leipzig, or Nuremberg. These airports offer the most convenient train connections to Weimar.

By train

  • You can easily reach Weimar from the following locations via Deutsche Bahn’s high-speed trains: Berlin (2.5 hours); Frankfurt/Main (2.5 hours); Leipzig (1 hour); Nuremberg (2 hours). Tickets can be booked through the Deutsche Bahn website.
  • With "Deutschlandticket", you can use all means of local transportation (bus, tram, regional train) throughout Germany. The "Deutschlandticket" costs €63/month and is a subscription (remember to cancel it in time!)
  • Weimar Central Station is located north of the city center, which can be reached in just a few minutes by bus or on foot.
     

By travel bus

  • Weimar can be reached by long-distance bus from numerous German cities. Cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt, and Erfurt are also served by buses from other European countries. Long-distance bus fares are often cheaper than tickets for high-speed trains and flights.
  • for travelling with long-distance busses we recommend the company "Flixbus"


By car
Weimar is located near the A4 highway (Weimar exit, interchange 49) and can be reached via the A7 (Kircheimer Dreieck) and A9 (Hermsdorfer Kreuz).
