Project description
A Public Wintersports Hall for All Year Use
The project is dedicated to the topic of winter tourism in the time of climate change. The aim was to develop alternative concepts that take climate change into account and enable year-round use in a sustainable way. In particular, an indoor winter sports arena was to be designed. Its layout was to be oriented towards Nordic disciplines such as ski jumping, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, speed skating and figure skating for a broad section of the population of all ages and performance levels. It was also conceivable to use it for international competitions.
For the development of such a project, an attractive area in one of the regions of the Thuringian Forest, the Ore Mountains or the Harz Mountains first had to be identified, whose suitability had to be proven by examining ecological and traffic engineering aspects. The sustainability of the architecturally and constructively sophisticated buildings themselves was to be achieved by selecting suitable architecture and materials appropriate to the cycle, by supplying renewable energies and a sustainable water or wastewater management system, etc.
A particularly demanding challenge was the option of enabling open-air events using adaptive façade systems.
