Winners of the »READING THE WORLD« Photo Competition Recognised

A jury made up of representatives from the four faculties of University Communications, University Development, the University Library and the International Office, as well as the President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, evaluated the submitted photographs, which featured a remarkable array of impressions from study abroad and international internships. The best works were ultimately honoured by Prof. Peter Benz, President of the Bauhaus Universität Weimar, as well as Dr. Christian Kästner and Andrea Weber from the International Office, as part of the exhibition in the University Library foyer.

This year’s competition winner is Tarek Rishmawi, a student at the Faculty of Art and Design, for his photograph »LIL’SHABAB«. The black-and-white image captures young people along the Mediterranean shores of Haifa, Israel – a site of yearning that many are unable to access.

Second prize was awarded to Mira Luna Casties of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism. Their photograph »DIALOG DER RÄUME« (»DIALOGUE OF SPACES«) shows the superimposition of two places and narratives into a single image, achieved through a double exposure of serene corners of Vienna.

Dolgorsuren Adiyabaatar, an international student from Mongolia studying at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism, received third prize for her photograph entitled »DER JUNGE, DER EINE SPRACHE LERNT« (»THE BOY WHO LEARNS A LANGUAGE«). The black-and-white photograph of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar campus captivates with its bold lines and intriguing shadows.

Daša Geiger of the Faculty of Art and Design received an award for her work »39° 20 ′ N, 0° 21 ′ W«, captured in the Parc Natural de l’Albufera in Spain, and Florian Marenbach of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism was recognised for his photograph »RUE DE FIERLANT«, depicting a flat in a converted metal workshop.

Alongside the jury, attendees of the exhibition were also invited to participate in the award ceremony.  The response was overwhelming, with nearly 300 students, staff and university guests casting votes for the Audience Award. Maximiliano Meneses Schulz won with his photograph entitled »Die Worte verweht der Wind / A las palabras se las lleva el viento« (»The words are gone with the wind«), captured during his internship in Havana, Cuba. It describes the transience that can also befall books.

The exhibition, featuring photographs from Romania, France, Argentina, Japan, Canada, Poland, Cuba, Ghana, Spain, Chile, Australia, Taiwan and many other countries, showcases a wide array of opportunities for students to attend one of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s international partner universities or to organise their own study abroad experience. It can be viewed in the University Library foyer until mid-December.

Those wishing to apply for exchange opportunities at any of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s many partner universities in Europe or around the globe can do so until 10 December 2024. The International Office will be happy to provide guidance on the various options available to you.

If you have any questions, please contact Andrea Weber in the International Office via phone at +49 (0) 3643 582361 or by e-mail at andrea.weber[at]uni-weimar.de.
