New Co-Working Space Opens in the University Library Foyer

The flexible space is equipped with customised tables and stools (Design & Realization: Andreas Wolter) that can be used by students and instructors in a variety of ways, including for seminars and workshops. But the space is not just for studying and working; it also offers a relaxed space for socialising. The tables have chess and backgammon boards printed on them so that game lovers can spend their breaks playing – provided they bring their own game pieces. The space has been well-received: A chess organisation has already expressed interest.

»The co-working space is a pilot project and offers students and staff a welcoming space to rest, take a break and relax between lectures. We want to rethink teaching and learning, and this includes creating spaces where learning groups can meet spontaneously and without having to book a space. Good ideas need inspiring spaces and learning needs community. We hope to make both of these things possible with the co-working space«, says Dr. Simon Frisch, Vice President of Student and Academic Affairs at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

To ensure that safety regulations are met, the area has been clearly defined with floor markings. Furniture can be flexibly arranged within this space. A friendly notice reminds people to use the space mindfully and respectfully.

The project is the result of collaboration between the University Library, the Presidium, University Strategic Development Office, the Service Centre for Facility Management, and the StuKo (Student Government). The co-working space was initially set launched as a pilot project. If it continues to be positively received, plans are in place to create additional workspaces in shared areas of the university.
