The summaery2025 at the Faculty of Art & Design: »ACHTUNG« – here’s what’s new!
»Imagine all Your Workspaces Empty« – this was the idea behind the project of the Product Design study programme. The thinking behind the project: in this project-based programme, the students change projects (and often also their workspace) every semester. So why not design their own workspace if everything is changing anyway?
The outcome was customised furniture, complemented with other products made of sheet metal, tailored precisely to the students’ needs. The designs are more than just furniture though: they embody the programme’s work culture, question learning environments, encourage an exchange and facilitate self-organisation. The exhibition »Designing Study Culture Workspaces – For Tomorrow« will open at 5 p.m. on Thursday 10 July 2025 in Room 003 at Geschwister-Scholl-Straße 13.
»GRUNDSTÖRUNG«, which means as much as »underlying disruption« or »core malfunction«, is the title of the exhibition by the second-semester students from the Fine Arts programme. At the start of their studies, students must do nothing less than search for their personal artistic focus. They begin by experimenting with a variety of materials and media – wood, plaster, metal, plastic, print, painting, textiles, photography, drawing, installation, video and sound. In the summer semester, the focus was on performance as an artistic practice. »Between plaster and doubt, sound and search: ›GRUNDSTÖRUNG‹ is not a mistake, but rather the subtle disturbance from which art can emerge,« says project manager Denise Blickhan of the project outcomes. Selected works can be viewed in Room 010/011 in the Van de Velde Building.
The first two semesters of Visual Communication set everything »in motion«. Posters, performances, photographs and films were created in a rapid exchange between chairs and departments, which will now be exhibited at the Gaswerk Weimar from 9 July. It’s well worth visiting Schwanseestraße: analogue and digital techniques were used for the graphic design, supplemented with visits to museums and cinemas. With the LOLYMPICS, the Chair for Image-Text-Concept invited students to develop their own sporting event featuring unusual disciplines. The photography workshop became like a second home where portraits, architectural photographs and stagings were created using unusual props. The moving image projects enticed with documentaries and sci-fi short films, while type systems were designed for self-invented football clubs in typography.
