»Green Configuration« – DFG project on energy-saving computer usage

The research group led by Prof. Dr. Norbert Siegmund has been working on the »Green Configuration« project for about two years now. It is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) with a total of €590,000 until 2021. With their findings, the scientists wish to help reduce the energy consumption of IT systems, which has virtually doubled in recent years – often due to suboptimal configuration of the systems. Hence this research project will initially focus on measuring the energy consumption of the individual hardware and software components in order to identify areas requiring improvement.

The research group has already developed the necessary measuring tools and conducted a preliminary investigation within the Faculty of Media. The study is to now be rolled out across the entire Bauhaus-Universität Weimar from 13 January 2020.

Search for test persons at the university
The researchers would like to take advantage of the variety of different work computers used at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar to collect information about the energy consumption in different workplaces. They are dependent on the cooperation of their colleagues to generate meaningful data and would therefore appreciate active participation.

All data collected on the computers’ energy consumption will be stored on local SD cards and processed in an anonymised format. The protection of personal data is guaranteed at all times: the study has been discussed with the university’s internal data protection officer and complies with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The study is scheduled to start on 13 January 2020. Test persons should work for five days per week on a permanently installed office computer and ideally use a Windows or Linux operating system.
