Media report: Comfortable and healthy

The Bayern 2 podcast »IQ - Science and Research« looks at why fresh air supply and heating in modern open-plan offices is challenging and how the indoor climate affects our health and ability to concentrate. Dr.-Ing. Hayder Alsaad from the Chair of Building Physics at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is working on solutions. Diary »SCIP plastics«, Episode 1: How everything begins

The research team of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Eckhard Kraft addresses a global problem: the plastic waste in our oceans. Thousands of years pass before it decomposes. The waste breaks down into smaller and smaller particles. They often mistake sea creatures for food, swallow them and often die from it in agony. The engineers at the Bauhaus University in Weimar, together with a team from Bangladesh and the Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE), are researching how to ensure that the garbage does not end up in the sea.

Caroline Ektander, born in Sweden in 1982, has been living in Berlin and working as a curator and architect for over ten years. Her work deals with the complex conditions of environmentally hazardous substances, poisons and toxins. She is currently working on her doctorate at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in the Faculty of Art and Design, focussing on the restoration of contaminated sites in Bitterfeld-Wolfen. In addition to this, she will be artistically exploring the contaminated ground water at the chemical site through support from the university’s Kreativfonds. Science editor Stephanie Waske asked Ektander about the context of this unusual research field.

From a Dream to a Project: The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Kreativfonds

Masks used as protection against the coronavirus have produced millions of tonnes of plastic waste. What if this waste could be recycled, even those masks contaminated by the virus? Two Bauhaus-Universität Weimar students could not stop asking themselves this question. Using a 3D printer, they showed what would be possible and created a toothbrush using recycled mask material. Their work is currently on display at the Marta Herford Museum or Art, Architecture, Design.
