International teaching expanded: Venezuelan professor joins Department of Computer Science for one year
In the winter semester 2019/20, an experienced individual of international acclaim joined the Department of Computer Science at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar: Professor Rhadamés Carmona from Venezuela has been awarded a one-year DAAD scholarship for a guest lectureship within the Faculty of Media. Carmona will contribute his expertise in the fields of computer graphics and visualisation to the computer scientists’ teaching and research.
From 1 October 2019, Professor Carmona from the Central University of Venezuela will complement the offers of the Department of Computer Science for one whole year with courses and projects on the subjects of »real-time rendering« and »competition programming«. A collaboration with the team headed by Professor Bernd Fröhlich (Professorship for Virtual Reality Systems) is moreover planned on research projects for the visualisation of large spatio-temporal data sets, which will also continue after Carmona’s stay in Germany.
By recruiting the first international visiting professor for the university for two semesters, the Faculty of Media contributes to the evolving internationalisation of research and teaching at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. The courses offered by Professor Carmona are already generating a great deal of interest – among students of both the Bachelor’s degree in computer science and the English-language Master’s degrees »Computer Science for Digital Media, Human Computer Interaction« and »Digital Engineering«.
Professor Rhadamés Carmona researches and teaches about computer science at the Central University of Venezuela. His connection to Germany goes back to a research internship at the former German National Research Center for Information Technology (GMD) in Bonn in 1999; he has maintained contact with Professor Bernd Fröhlich ever since. They have co-authored countless highly acclaimed research papers, which have also been integrated into the teaching on visualisation at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
Professor Carmona’s lectureship is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
About Professor Rhadamés Carmona
Professor Carmona began his scientific career in 1995 at the Central University of Venezuela. He was appointed as a professor at the age of just 22, as only very few people afforded comparable expertise on the subject of computer graphics at the time. Over the course of his scientific career, he has participated in various research projects in the field of health research, such as the non-invasive examination of polyps in the human spine or the realisation of a virtual operating theatre. His research interests include the visualisation of large quantities of data, virtual reality, computer vision and artificial intelligence.
