»How do we want to live?« | Ideenlabor Weimar Digital Conference Programme Highlight for the #NewEuropeanBauhaus

On Europe Day (9 May), architect Van Bo Le-Mentzel will demonstrate how to use small spaces wisely in the Ideenlabor DIY-Zukunftswerkstatt. The architect will be refurnishing the 21-square-metre streaming studio in the Bauhaus-Museum Weimar live in a playful and visual way so that you can replicate it in your own home. Materials expert Felix Heisel from the Circular Construction Lab at Cornell University and architect Dirk Hebel will be joining us live in the Ideenlabor to discuss urban mining, recycling raw materials, and how the materials of the future are already all around us. Climate researcher Hans Joachim Schellnhuber and sociologist Armin Nassehi will also be offering their insights. Thuringian Minister of Infrastructure and Agriculture Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff, Klassik Stiftung Weimar President Ulrike Lorenz, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar President Winfried Speitkamp, and Ruth Reichstein from the EU Commission’s Advisory Board I.D.E.A. will speak on »Das Netzwerk erwacht: Das Ideenlabor als Inkubator, Raum-Öffner und Brückenbauer«.

The working phase with concrete projects will take place in workshops held on 13 and 14 May. The »Wir – in der Stadt der Zukunft« (We – In the City of the Future) workshop asks the central question »Wie wollen wir leben?« (How do we want to live?) within an urban context. Sustainable food production in urban areas and the ecological transformation of public spaces are just two of the topics that Anton Brokow-Loga, Anne-Kathrin Kuhlemann, and Anna Paulina Graf from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will be discussing with all interested participants.

The »Landleben for Future« workshop will bring together local projects that explore the potential for ecological change in rural areas and explores the necessary basic conditions in the European context.
A workshop on the idea of »Grünes Bauen« (green building) will feature Thomas Lützkendorf, expert on sustainable building at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Hannes Schmidt, architect of the »Grünes Labor« in the Park an der Ilm, and Katja Fischer from the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Thüringen.

Lastly, the »Darf das Bauhaus heißen?« (Can we call this Bauhaus?) workshop asks whether the »New European Bauhaus«  title of the EU initiative is appropriate and where the shortcomings in its association with the classic Bauhaus are. Annemarie Jaeggi, Director of the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, Regina Bittner from the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, and Winfried Speitkamp, President of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, will discuss the ways in which the Bauhaus can continue to inspire in the future, what needs an »update«, and what should be left behind in the 20th century.
All three days will serve as a preparation for Thuringian institutions to apply for the New European Bauhaus and will connect participants with one another.

The finalised programme for each of the conference days will be published on the website www.ideenlabor-weimar.de. The central platform for the event is the Ideenlabor app.

The digital conference will take place in cooperation with the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Thüringen, The Bauhaus Kooperation, as well as the »Initiative Deutschland – Land der Ideen«  (»Germany - Land of Ideas« initiative). The event is funded through support from the Free State of Thuringia, the Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien, the Stiftung für Technologie, Innovation und Forschung Thüringen, and the Klimaschutzstiftung Jena-Thüringen.
