Highest Honours at the red dot Awards for Design Duo and Media Artist from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar

Sandra Krebs and Alexander Döpel were honoured with the highest distinction of the competition, the red dot »best of the best«, for their packaging idea »OBSTFIGUREN« (»Fruit Figures«). In addition, they took home the highest individual award of the competition, »the red dot: grand prix«, which they received in the Corporate Design category (Packaging Design).

Döpel and Krebs developed »OBSTFIGUREN« to get children excited about eating fresh fruit. To introduce the little ones to foods rich in nutrients, the Bauhaus students made humorous figures out of pieces of fruit. They formed animals and toys out of different fruits and placed them in dishes. The children, drawn to the bright colours and novel appearance, immediately become curious about the items made from fresh fruit.

Alexander Döpel’s idea was well-received at Scholz and Friends Agency Network in Berlin, where he was interning. After finding an appropriate client, the concept was developed further. The »red dot: grand prix« 2012 jury praised the brand as »strong and convincing«, since it created an identity through the product itself. Despite the unconventional approach, the campaign was perfectly implemented, especially with a view to the target group of children.

The „OBSTFIGUREN» have earned prizes at numerous national and international competitions, earning gold in the Design category at the One Show Design Awards, Bronze in the Consumer Promotions category at the New York Festival, Bronze in the Dialogue Marketing category, as well as a distinction in the »Out-of-Home Ambient« category  at ADC Deutschland, and the bronze Cannes Lion Award 2012. The creators Alexander Döpel and Sandra Krebs were also honoured in June, 2012, for their earlier work Die ZEIT ZU HANDELN! installation with the ADC*E-Title »European Student of the Year«. Both projects derived from the Schland project of Prof. Werner Holzwarth and Björn Kernspeckt in the Faculty of Art and Design.

Patrick Richter also took home a »red dot« award in the Communication Design category. The Media Art/Media Design student was honoured for his new On-Air design for the MDR programme Unicato. The Bauhaus Film Institute of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the MDR State Broadcasting Centre of Thuringia jointly submitted the new On-Air design for the award.

Patrick Richter has given the student film magazine Unicato a contemporary appearance with his On-Air design. He developed the prize-winning design in the university project module »Unicato«, initially for a special music issue of the magazine.  The result was an impressive collage of moving images, stop-motion, digitally-adapted historical analogue effects and pictures of decommissioned anatomy models.

The students involved in the project, the supervising instructors Prof. Wolfgang Kissel, Juliane Fuchs and Olaf Nenninger, and the MDR colleagues responsible for Unicato— Werner Dienste, chief executive of the State Broadcasting Centre of Thuringia and Benedikt Otto, Chief Editor of Unicato—were all thrilled with the result that a fundamental design change had been agreed upon for Unicato. It was used officially for the first time for the July, 2012 issue.

The »red dot« award is an internationally recognized design prize and is one of the most coveted prizes worldwide. The »red dot: grand prix« is the highest honour that red dot bestows for the best work in each category.
Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has been giving the red dot awards since 1954. The Communication Design category was created in 2000.

You can find further information about red dot at http://de.red-dot.org/4928.html as well as Alexander Döpel’s home page at www.alexander-doepel.com and at the MDR website at  www.mdr.de/unicato.
