Outstanding Final Projects from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism React to Current Social and Planning Challenges
In a celebratory ceremony, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar bid farewell to around 170 graduates. As part of the graduation ceremony, outstanding final projects were honoured with prizes and awards. The exhibition of the award-winning and award-nominated projects will be on display in the Main Building of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar until 18 December 2025.
Three prizes went to:
Julius Leander Hemmes for his Bachelor's thesis in Architecture, »Maison du Peuple«. His new building in Brussels complements the existing residential blocks typical of 19th and 20th century architecture and creates a structurally impressive, open-plan space for gathering. The clear architectural style and thoughtful integration into the urban environment make the design a contemporary counterpart to the historic Maison du Peuple by Belgian Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta. Urbanistik (Urbanism) Bachelor graduates Jasper Ellis Krüger and Caroline Kormann for their joint thesis »Blau-Grüne Lebenslinien, Ribnitz-Damgarten«. Based on a comprehensive review, the graduates developed a future-focussed mission statement for the regional centre that combines ecological, transport, tourism, and social considerations. Architecture graduate Carina Mosafer for her Bachelor's thesis »Raum für Mut, Architektur und Widerstand der afghanischen Frauen unter den Taliban«, in which she combines experience with an architectural and spatial living environment. Her work conveys a highly relevant topic with clear imagery and a deep degree of reflection. The jury also recognised 17 additional final projects with special mentions.
»Each of the exhibition contributions reflect an outstanding level of work. Taken together, they showcase exceptional and exciting solutions and ideas for the broad canon of architecture and planning, as well as scientific and artistic strategies and methods. They also clearly represent the current state of discourse in the disciplines represented«, summarised the jury. The topics range from participatory processes in rural areas and questions of the common good to resource-efficient construction and climate adaptation to global perspectives on cities and society. They highlight areas from Erfurt to Leipzig-Grünau, and from Ribnitz-Damgarten to Paris, Brussels, and Mexico City. The overall impression of the works represents the diversity of approaches in architecture and urbanism.
The jury this year consisted of the following members: Jörg Baum (Director of Junk & Reich in Weimar and board member of the Architektenkammer Thüringen), Aline Hielscher (Aline Hielscher Architect in Leipzig), Prof. Bernd Rudolf (former Director of Building Morphology at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar), and Dr. Brigitta Ziegenbein (Director of the City Planning in Urban Development and Building Department in Leipzig).
The designers of the award-winning works received one-year free subscriptions to the magazines »ARCH+, DETAIL«, »bauwelt«, »Die Planerin« and »wa aktuell« as well as prize money donated by the Architektenkammer Thüringen.
The exhibition will be on display in the Main Building of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar until 18 December 2025. It honours the achievements of the graduates and showcases the diversity and commitment of aspiring architects and urban planners in response to the future challenges of architecture and the city.
