Living on the Moon: Bauhaus-Universität Weimar Presents Concepts at »DGLR-Mitmachtag 2025«

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will have its own booth at this year’s »Mitmachtag der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DGLR)« in Erfurt. On 4 October 2025, concepts for structures on the surface of the moon will be presented together with the visionary »Spacestation Cloud 9« model for low-lunar orbit. The project was developed by students and is part of the interdisciplinary »Beyond Horizon« project at the Professorship of Construction Design and Structural Design under the title »Sea-scraper«.

How can architecture be design to withstand the extreme environmental conditions that exist on Earth, the Moon, or Mars? This was the question that Architecture and Civil Engineering students at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar’s Professorship of Construction Design and Structural Design explored during the 2023/2024 winter semester. Under the motto »Living under extreme environmental conditions« and as part of the Beyond Horizon project, the students designed structures that can withstand extreme temperatures, exceptional atmospheric influences like electrical surges and storms, mechanical vibrations, and even the impact of space particles.

The results are sustainable, resource-efficient architectural concepts whose models have been tested for functionality and visualised in animated films. Prof. Jürgen Ruth, former Professorship Director, will explain the project in more detail in two short lectures on 4 October. The short films produced for the project will also be presented.

The event will be accompanied musically by Weimar’s »five below zero« band, who will help provide a unique atmosphere through their selection of groovy »Moon Songs«.

The DGLR’s participatory event encourages visitors to experience science, technology, and innovation up close.
