Insights into studies: Winterwerkschau shows projects and experiments by art and design students

Once a year, the student council of the Faculty of Art and Design invites all students to present their current work in an exhibition. Over 50 projects and courses have registered and can be visited and explored from Friday, 6 February to Sunday, 8 February 2026.

The Winterwerkschau is not a glossy display, but rather provides direct insights into the study programme. Students present their projects, work and experiments in studios and workrooms, often in the places where they were created. These include various stages of work, finished pieces as well as processes, sketches and experiments.

Visitors thus gain an impression of how artistic and creative work is produced during their studies and which questions, methods and materials play a role in this process. For prospective students, the exhibition offers a good opportunity to stroll around the campus and get to know working methods and everyday student life up close. The students are on site and look forward to talking to the guests of the exhibition.

During the winter exhibition, there will not only be works on display, but also opportunities to get involved. Visitors can get involved in nine workshops under the motto »Gute Gestaltung« (Good Design) without prior registration, for example in printing techniques, typography and working with paper, light, shadow, form and colour. On Saturday evening, 7 February 2026, cineastes will get what they want: student films will be shown in the Maurice Halbwachs Auditorium in the University Library from 8 p.m. onwards.

The Faculty of Media is also presenting several projects at this year's Winterwerkschau. The focus is on the creative use of artificial intelligence: students not only use AI as a technical tool, but also encounter it as an aesthetic, narrative and interactive partner. In installations, performances and experimental formats, they ask questions of AI, interpret it or deliberately throw it off balance – and thus make it tangible as part of artistic processes. These works are complemented by projects that explore memory, identity and perception and experiment with media forms between text, image and interaction. Almost all of these projects can be seen at Bauhausstraße 11.

There is another special offer for prospective students: portfolio consultations are held in the artistic and design degree programmes, which can be attended without prior registration. Teachers and students provide feedback on work samples and answer questions about applications, aptitude tests and studying at the Bauhaus University Weimar.
