Project description

NOVA art space is proud to announce WALKING WEIMAR, a curatorial project on paper and a handbook for a fictional exhibition in public space. It is based on the seminar ‘NOVA_remote, testing new curatorial strategies’ by Katharina Wendler – an attempt to continue the activities of NOVA art space through online teaching – for which students of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar engaged in twelve weeks of walking, reading and writing.
The publication compiles more than twenty essays on and around the topics of walking and writing as curatorial practice and artistic strategy, as well as maps, images, text reviews, and more. It explores the format of the exhibition at a time of lockdown and crisis when the reception of physical artworks shifted from closed-off institutions to the virtual realm, or the realm of the mind.
NOVA art space was founded in spring 2019 as a platform for contemporary art at Bauhaus University Weimar and has since then completed five major projects, ranging from exhibitions to talks, matching young artistic positions with established artists and curators.
WALKING WEIMAR, NOVA’s sixth project, again seeks to offer an unconventional approach to exhibition-making. By applying the method of walking, so often acknowledged as the motor of creativity per se, it promotes deceleration and slowness, as well as careful observation of space, as a central tool of the curatorial.
