HeriTech - Digital technologies for traditional crafts and cultural heritage

With its monuments, Thuringia and Germany have a cultural heritage that is invaluable for our cultural identity as well as for tourism. Under the umbrella term of revitalization, the preservation, refurbishment and upgrading of historic buildings represent an enormous economic and technical challenge that requires a wide range of tailor-made solutions. The applicants are addressing this and would like to develop innovative digital methods and tools for building conservation in the proposed project. Based on extensive preliminary work and a broad cooperation network, the following digital technologies will be used:

  1. Drone-based photogrammetric 3D building surveys and laser scanning of building components,
  2. digital methods for 3D modeling, anomaly mapping, annotation and context-related storage of building and component data,
  3. structural analyses for the digital recording of building conditions and for deriving revitalization strategies,
  4. numerical simulation methods of modern building materials and composites and their connections,
  5. additive manufacturing processes, in particular 3D printing for the individualized reproduction of historical building components.

Methods are to be further developed that initially allow largely autonomous 3D recording of large and complex building geometries and condition data. These are to be automatically processed and refined using model technology in order to be able to store digital images of the cultural assets that can be preserved and to create a basis for revitalization planning. Replacement or supplementary components to be additively manufactured and applied with new joining technologies are to be characterized in terms of material technology in high-quality simulation models, e.g. with multiscale and multiphysics approaches. This will make it possible, for example, to predict fatigue behavior, resistance to aggressive media or the bonding behavior between new and existing components. The simulations are intended to represent the additive manufacturing process and must therefore be developed in the context of different processes. The aim is not a dedicated solution to detailed problems, but rather the development of generically applicable methods, i.e. process chains that can have a generally disruptive effect on the refurbishment sector.
