Second numgeo workshop in Bochum

On November 10–11, 2025, the second numgeo workshop of the year took place at the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics at Ruhr University Bochum.

Approximately 50 participants including colleagues from Ruhr University Bochum, Technische Universität Darmstadt, the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute (BAW), as well as Prof. Patrick Staubach and Lisa Tschirschky from the Chair of Geotechnics at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar discussed the latest advances in finite element modelling for geotechnical applications, current developments in constitutive models for soils, their implementation, and application examples in numgeo.

The workshop combined technical presentations with hands-on exercises and covered topics such as:

  • advanced constitutive models for sand, clay, and bio-cemented sand
  • high-cycle accumulation of deformations and long-term soil behaviour
  • assessment of liquefaction susceptibility
  • modelling of laterally loaded piles and monopiles
  • slope stability analysis
  • numerical modelling of suction-caisson foundations
  • PFEM-based approaches for large-deformation analysis

Overall, it was a successful workshop for all presenters and participants, with insightful discussions and constructive exchange between research, software development, and practice.

We would like to thank the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics at Ruhr University Bochum and all contributors for the excellent organisation, and we look forward to continued collaboration and future workshops.
