The jury’s verdict:

The »horizonte« lecture series is one of the longest-running student initiatives at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Launched in 1992 as a lecture series on architecture, art and design, almost 550 lectures have been held over the past 25 years. One remarkable and unique characteristic is the independent organisation and setting of topics by students for this official lecture series offered by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.

This »status« has allowed countless leading figures to be brought to Weimar, including Alejandro Aravena, Frei Otto, Lacaton Vassal, MVRDV, Peter Märkli, Renato Rizzi, Luigi Snozzi, Rob Krier, UN Studio, OMA, Alberto Campo Baeza, Dogma – along with many other (inter)national ambassadors of building culture. The initiative opens up new perspectives, creates space for a discourse between study and practice, and fosters the emergence of what is often described in architecture as an »attitude«. Generations of student volunteers have managed to develop a good sense for continuously seeking out modernity and inviting it to Weimar.

The »horizonte« magazine on architectural discourse has been produced in the print workshop at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar since 2010. It is published every semester with a changing thematic focus in close cooperation with design and media students. It is worth mentioning here that many alumni managed to find their own personal access to research and teaching through their voluntary work at »horizonte«. A model for young people that is paving the way to the future!
