Teaching mission statement

  • Teaching and Learning Mission Statement
  • TEACHING STRATEGY
  • BACKGROUND INFORMATION

It is the university's responsibility to provide excellent teaching and to ensure successful learning in a learning environment tailored to specific needs. Good teaching and successful studying are a joint task to which all members of the university contribute: lecturers, students and administrative staff. The teaching mission statement defines fundamental values and goals for the (further) development of study programmes. It ties in directly with the previous »STEP Process 2030«.

What has happened so far?

1) Kick-off workshop

1) Kick-off workshop On the »Day of Teaching and Learning 2024«, the Vice-President for Teaching and Learning, Dr. Simon Frisch, invited all status groups to a workshop to participate in the launch of the participatory process for the »Teaching and Learning Mission Statement«.

2) Student survey

In order to gain the student perspective, students were invited to participate in a short survey on the topic: What does good teaching and good learning mean to you? The perspective is incorporated into the mission statement text.

3) Drafting

The editorial group, consisting of three people from different status groups, wrote a first draft in regular consultation with Dr. Simon Frisch. This draft was sent in October 2024 to the faculties, DIB, DSL, UE, equal opportunities and diversity officers, student representatives and other members of the steering group for comment.

4) Finalisation

Based on the extensive feedback received over the past few months, the draft was revised and further developed in several iteration loops. In March 2025, the steering group held its final meeting, during which the text was read, reflected upon and finalised. This marked a significant milestone in the process, which also forms the basis for future strategic developments.

5) Reading and adaptation

The mission statement text was presented to the committees starting in April 2025. In May 2025, the Teaching and Learning Mission Statement was adopted by the Senate.

6) Publishing

The Teaching and Learning Mission Statement was published in the 2025/26 winter semester. You can find it on the subpage »Our Guidelines«.

What is a teaching strategy?

The teaching strategy concretizes and supplements the objectives and measures for teaching and studies, which are intended to provide a guiding framework for the future design of teaching and study programs. The updating of the teaching strategy will be launched following the teaching mission statement process.

All interested parties are cordially invited to participate in the process of updating the teaching strategy.

Please contact the Vice President for Teaching and Learning, Dr. Simon Frisch.

A teaching mission statement and a teaching strategy are two different concepts: The starting point is the teaching mission statement, which defines fundamental values and goals for the (further) development of study programs. The teaching strategy then concretizes and supplements the objectives and measures for teaching and studies, which are intended to provide a guiding framework for the future design of teaching and the range of courses on offer.

The following steps were agreed in Framework Agreement V between the Thuringian state government and the state's universities (2021-2025) and the target and performance agreement between the TMWWDG and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (2021-2025):

2024"Participatory Process with the aim of updating the teaching strategy" ZLV (2021-2025)
2025"Each university shall further develop its quality assurance system for the area of teaching and, if not already in place, create a mission statement for teaching so that the requirements for conversion to the instrument of system accreditation can be met by 2025." RvV (2021-2025)
2025"Resolution of the Executive Board on the University's updated teaching strategy" ZLV (2021-2025)
