Faculty of Art and Design

At the Faculty of Art and Design, the »Weimarer Modell« concept offers you with professional conditions for studying and actively accompanies you throughout your professional life.

Achieve your full potential using our modern workshops equipped with the latest technology, including traditional wood, metal, printing, plaster and sculpture workshops, the photo and video studios and the computer pools. These are available to students in the Product Design, Visual Communication and Free Art degree programmes, our MFA students in the international master’s degree programme »Public Art and New Artistic Strategies« and teacher trainees in Art Education. Our students do more than study – they participate in a vibrant and inspiring exchange.

Project work encourages students to share their expertise with one another. Every semester, we offer you a wide selection of theme-based projects to choose from. This is your chance to develop your creative potential. In-class discussions and knowledge of scientific subjects promote a deeper understanding of the artistic and cultural processes, aesthetics, history and theory of design, art, visual communication and art education. Only at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will you find a curriculum of such diversity. It is this unique feature which allows us to offer Germany’s one and only PhD programme in »Art and Design/Free Art/Media Art«. Upon completion, doctoral candidates are awarded a doctorate in Philosophy (Dr.phil.) by the Faculty of Art and Design.

In line with the tradition of the historic Bauhaus, the boundaries separating (free) art and (applied) design are less defined than at other art schools in Germany, yet still comply with the specific rules and criteria of quality expected in the art world and design scene. We not only support you on your career path with professional training programmes, but also actively assist you in conducting artistic research, coming up with ideas and putting them into practice with suitable media and technology. We can also help you organise a catalogue (portfolio), develop presentations or exhibitions, advise you on how best to generate publicity and forge contacts to the art/design scene and the business world.
