Projekt: »Scientific Cosmology and the Urban Professions (1800-1950)«
1) Why are you researching or studying at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar?
I am studying at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar because of its tradition in architectural and urban theory, and for the outstanding faculty and student network that I am able to draw from.
2) What is special about your project? Why is it relevant?
My research examines the historical connection between new scientific ideas and the changing goals and purposes of urban planners. My dissertation, titled »Scientific Cosmology and the Urban Expertise (1800-1950)« examines a connected set of discoveries in the biological/natural sciences (most significantly, Darwinian theory), and argues that early British planning ideas were made possible and desirable by a deeper transformation in scientific theories about the universe, and the place of humanity within the cosmos. My research aims to help us understand how and why particular goals come to be seen as natural within the spatial disciplines.
