Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is an internationally established university that looks back on 160 years of history and sees itself in the tradition of the Bauhaus. It combines science, technology, art, and design. This approach significantly shapes the self-image of the faculties of Media, Architecture and Urbanism, Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Art and Design. Beyond their subject-specific tasks, the faculties are particularly committed to interdisciplinary cooperation and the integration of practice, art, and science.
The Faculty of Media at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Department of Media Studies, is seeking to fill the professorship (W1 with tenure track to W3) for
»European Media Culture«
as of April 1, 2027.
Since 1996, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, together with its partner university, the Université Lumière (Lyon 2), has been running the integrated German-French bilingual study program »European Media Culture«. The program is studied in Weimar as part of the B.A. degree program in Media Culture. It is funded by the German-French University and currently offers 12 places per year. Both participating universities are also members of the EU-funded university alliance »Bauhaus4EU«, which has been in existence since 2024.
The »European Media Culture« program addresses, analyzes, and examines the perspectives, challenges, and problems of the pluralistic European cultural space as specific questions of media history and media theory against the backdrop of current upheavals, for example in relation to migration, democracy, and Europe's integration into global contexts. The Weimar component of the program focuses on historical, aesthetic, and conceptual considerations. The Lyon component is dominated by communication science, semiotic, and empirical methods, for which applicants should demonstrate an appropriate level of understanding. In this context, the professorship is intended to contribute to further raising the profile of research at this currently relevant interface between international media studies and European studies. In addition, the area of responsibility also includes administration, program development, and expansion of the teaching and research area »European Media Culture«. The willingness to participate in third-party funding applications as well as the ability and willingness to supervise doctoral projects are also expected.
The general appointment requirements are regulated in § 89 of the Thuringian Higher Education Act. Applicants must have completed a degree in media, film, or cultural studies and have a doctoral degree of outstanding quality. In addition, they must be able to demonstrate further academic contributions and teaching experience and propose an independent research project. They must have relevant experience not only in German but also in French-speaking academic culture and be able to offer courses and hold examinations in both German and French. English language skills are also required. Communication with partner institutions and their representatives (German-French University DFH, Université Lumière Lyon) is also part of the professorship's responsibilities. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to be willing to collaborate with other professors in the Department of Media Studies as well as other departments and faculties, and to take on responsibility in academic self-administration.
Diversity and equal opportunity are important concerns at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. We are committed to a family-friendly and non-discriminatory working environment and pursue an equality-promoting, diversity-oriented personnel policy. We therefore particularly welcome applications from people with different backgrounds, experiences, and biographies. One of the strategic goals of Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is to increase the proportion of women in scientific, artistic, and academic fields. We therefore expressly encourage qualified female candidates to apply. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration if equally qualified.
The university expects applicants to be willing to relocate to Weimar or the surrounding area. The university will be happy to assist you with the relocation.
