Job Opening

The Professorship of »Interface Design« in the Faculty of Art and Design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is currently inviting applications for the position of:

Artistic Employee (m/f/d) Creative Technologist

for the »Media Art and Design« degree programme.

The position begins on 1 September 2026. This is a part-time (75 %) position with a 30-hour work week. The purpose of the position is to foster professional development. The position is initially limited until 31.08.2029. An extension is possible in accordance with the applicable regulations stipulated in the »Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetzes (WissZeitVG)«.

Responsibilities:

  • Independently prepare and implement courses in English for both Bachelor's and Master's programmes in physical computing, human-machine interaction, interactive environments, embedded systems, and interactive media.
  • Laboratory supervision: Electronic Lab, Prototype Lab 
  • Select, procure, and maintain technical equipment and materials (microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, electrical engineering equipment)
  • Supervision of student projects, theses, and laboratory exercises
  • Development and documentation of new hardware/software prototypes, sensor/actuator systems, and IoT applications
  • Assist in organising and implementing exhibitions and other cultural events
  • Ensuring occupational safety and laboratory regulations in the laboratories of the Professorship
  • Supervision and coordination of third-party funded projects and artistic-design research projects
  • Participation in self-administration duties at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar
  • Professional development through an individually motivated, artistic/design project
  • The pursuit of a Ph.D. is desired and strongly encouraged

Hiring Requirements:

  • Completed higher education degree (MA, diploma) in the field of art and design or in a related scientific subject with proven artistic practice
  • Knowledge and experience with relevant programmes, programming languages, and tools such as Arduino, ESP 32, Raspberry Pi, MicroPython, C/C++, JavaScript, sensor technology, actuator technology, microcontroller programming
  • Practical experience in designing and conceiving multimedia interfaces and interactive installations
  • Skilled in the development and debugging of analogue and digital electronics
  • Critical, creative approaches to working and reflecting on (new) technologies
  • Organisational skills (workshops, exhibitions)
  • Excellent English skills
  • Professional experience, teaching aptitude, ability to work independently
  • Regular presence on campus at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is required
  • Not required, but desirable: basic knowledge of rapid prototyping methods (laser cutting, 3D printing, CNC)

The salary is based on the provisions stipulated in the »Tarifvertrag für den Öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L)« (Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federal States) in accordance with personal qualifications up to pay grade 13 TV-L.
