Henning Schmidgen, Mathias Schönher and Jenny Brockmann at Bauhaus-Museum, Weimar

Workshop followed by lectures from 13:00 to 19:00 in project room A in the basement of the Bauhaus Museum Weimar, with students and researchers of the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus University Weimar and museum visitors.

The project is a collaboration with the b.m.b. lab of the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus University and takes place in the context of the anniversary year of the 1923 Bauhaus exhibition of and Klassik Stiftung Weimar theme year “Living.”

The public workshop explores how, by way of a medium, differing, close or distant, urban or architectural spaces can be related to each other. The starting point is the assumption that a space and its connections to other spaces follow a certain logic that results from the people as well as the things and structures that define it. The workshop aims to explore this logic together. In doing so, it will also explore the extent to which animistic positions, which do not only ascribe actions to living beings alone, provide a new approach.

Leading the workshop from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. is South African architect Tom Sanya, whose practice combines participatory approaches to 3D design with design solutions to connect architectural spaces. He will first present his work and then explore spaces and connections around the project space in the basement of the Bauhaus Museum and in the Weimarhallenpark with the participants in small experimental groups.

Following the workshop, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., there will be short lectures by Prof. Dr. Henning Schmidgen (media theorist and historian of science), Dr. Mathias Schönher (philosopher), Jenny Brockmann (artist), and Dr. Tom Sanya (architect). The first three speakers jointly lead the research project headed by the Chair of Media Theory and History of Science at Bauhaus University Weimar, “Animism/Maschinism: Configurations of Critique between Science, Art and Technology.”
