Aim

The aim of the project EVaSENS is to develop further integrated solutions for the renovation of the line inventory. In view of future practical implementation of new plumbing and drainage systems (NASS) the only option on a nationwide scale is when existing structures are used and enhanced by successful technical applications. The project approach is therefore based on an integration of innovative plumbing technology and a new development for technological modernisation measures in the portfolio. This is intended as an absolute novelty and the technical possibility of a tube-in-tube reconstruction in combination with vacuum technology, first developed on the test rig, will be demonstrated later in buildings belonging to the Training and Demonstration Centre for Decentralised Sewage Treatment (BDZ) in Leipzig. As a technical supplement to the research project, the proposed approach can be combined with a newly developed liner method for the rehabilitation of pipeline systems in building. This new liner method is presently going through the German certification process.

Basis of this project is an innovative process in the pipeline and new developments in plumbing technology based on vacuum technology. The vacuum technique has already been used for many years on cruise ships and on high speed railway coaches and is constantly being improved. The pipe lining technology that has evolved in recent decades as the main method of grave-less sewer rehabilitation is planned to be combined with a new method for black water separation. If the project is successful, the new method would allow a cost-effective integration of new plumbing systems in buildings and thus the precondition for sustainable urban development in the tenor set down by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research required realignment.

In old buildings the originally introduced liner ensures the functionality of the new inventory. The next step is to introduce a flexible pipe DN 40 into the already existing liner and connect the flexible pipe airtight with the toilet and a vacuum station. During the testing phase consultation shall take place with the practitioners of the partner companies to render the best piping material and the best fixation techniques. If the new technology is successful on the test rig, the new technology will be installed in buildings belonging to the education centre for decentralized wastewater technology BDZ in Leipzig. This will enable a presentation of the test rig results to the wider public. Due to the different target groups for NASS different forms of information will be prepared to address each target group them. In the future it will be important to join the relevant actors into a network and discuss the priorities and next steps. The BDZ is an important component of this network. The information gained from EVaSENS will also be utilised as „raw material“ for further research approaches. The BDZ binds academic experts as well as business and politics and acts therefore as a neutral platform in the field of decentralized wastewater.
