Application

Prerequisites:

To be eligible for admission to the PhD programmes in Art and Design, candidates must have attained a Magister, MFA, MA, or Diplom qualification from an Arts Academy or University offering artistic or design degree programmes. Especially skilled candidates with a bachelor's degree in a related artistic or design course of study may be admitted to the programme on a case by case basis. Similarly, candidates with degrees from other disciplines (e.g. in the humanities or social sciences) with exceptional professional artistic experience may be accepted to the doctoral programme. In such cases the graduate commission is responsible for determining the candidate's eligibility and may recommend further additional coursework if deemed necessary for acceptance into the programme.

The PhD programme is predominantly conducted in German. For this reason, a prerequisite for admission is proof of language proficiency in the German language at a competence level of C1 of the Common European Framework (CEFR) by a) proof of mother tongue, b) acquisition of higher education entrance qualification or a university degree from a German-speaking country, or c) one of the following certificates: DSH-2 or TestDaF (at least 4 x TDN 4).
