Project description

In response to Elizabeth Povinelli’s (1995) essay, “Do Rocks Listen?”, this course investigates on the one hand the witnessing potential of rocks and on the other hand the listening potential of humans in their interactions with and in the lithosphere. The second installment in the seminar series by the chair of arts and research, Environmental Entanglements and Epistemologies (EEE), focuses on different ways of knowing and engaging with stone formations in built and natural environments. We are specifically interested in the socio-political, legal, and cultural agency of geologic entities, how they are studied and understood, how they are used, and how they are represented, honored, and defended in an age of increased anthropogenic change. Furthermore we are interested in acts of listening as means of multi-species and more-than-human understanding. We will dig into the history, philosophy and sociology of the lithosphere, exploring concepts of e.g. weathering, deep time, sedimentation, geontology and animism, by authors such as Elizabeth Povinelli, Kathryn Yussof, Jussi Parikka, Tim Ingold and others. We will also hear from artists and artist researchers about their understanding of lithospheric worlds and visit research institutions and geologic sites of importance. The facilitation of the course is fundamentally participant-oriented, non-hierarchical, with a focus on experimentation and critical thinking.
