Project description

The international artists of the MFA programme “Public Art and New Artistic Strategies” will transform the public space of the city into a stage on which new questions of artistic work will be tested.

In the current crises, we are witnessing, as we have not for a long time, a debate about "the West" and "the East," newly flared geopolitical conflicts that, despite everything, make the interconnectedness of the world tangible to us. Parallel to this division, the more extreme climatic conditions make us realize that we share the reality of the same planet. Especially at this time, sensitivity to neocolonial systems and postcolonial responsibilities is extremely relevant to decolonize social processes.

The exhibition project 50°59′N 11°19′E — DIS/ORIENTING STRATEGIES IN PUBLIC SPACES confronts this complex situation with site-specific artistic interventions, participatory installations and performances, that explore and deploy art as a means of social transformation through the coordinates of space, place, environment, axes, routes, connections and bodies.

The aim is to make Weimar tangible not only in its international significance, but in its international reality, and to locate the city as a place of global change with the help of a subtle, artistic mapping process.
