The waterfront of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is characterized by a large former industrial area, which is bordered by the city center of Stralsund, the residential area and the shipyard. With the aim to create a place of meeting and exchange and to unite people and water, the concept of the Confluential Harbour was created. Confluence is the term used to describe the merging of two or more rivers. We want to create an area that is equally used by the inhabitants of Stralsund, the industry/shipyard and tourism. With the goal of preserving the character of Stralsund’s water’s edge, it is important to us to establish the existing buildings of the area as well as possible in our concept in a sustainable and economical way. The historic buildings, with concrete foundations underground, can be gutted and adapted to new purposes by adding storeys. Our 5 zones create direct connections between Stralsund and the water’s edge and invite to experience the water’s edge. Within the zones, culture, business & research, living, art/craft and mobility take place. Thereby, the different zones offer different elements of encounter and experience. To ensure the longevity and usability of the newly designed Wasserkante, a scientifically based flood concept consisting of 3 strategies was developed: Storm Drainage ; Green Channels that subdivide the area and break up the sealed surfaces, act as runoff channels during high rainfall and recreational trails during dry periods. The Collective Shutter System is a flood barrier that can be constructed by residents on short notice. Resilient lightweight elevation will withstand flooding in the event of a flood, first floor can be flooded without causing major damage. Stralsund’s water’s edge is being redesigned, making it accessible to people with different intended uses.
