Fischerhof | Hansestadt Uelzen | 2025
On the outskirts of Hansestadt Uelzen – surrounded by forest and bordering an industrial area – lies the object of study: a heritage-listed building and its equally protected fishing pond. Since around 1600, the site has undergone various uses, most likely always under municipal ownership. Its most recent function was as a youth hostel, which operated from 1975 until this year. With a comprehensive refurbishment now required, the city is now faced with the task of determining an appropriate future for this historically significant property.
This student project engages directly with this challenge. Through research, analysis, design work and financial assessment, students will develop new insights into the site’s potential, proposing ideas and options for its future development.
Through research, analysis, design work, and a financial perspective, students will develop new insights into the site’s potential and propose ideas and options for its future development.
In November 2025, the students travelled to Uelzen and visited the project area together with the local city planning department. After an insightful exchange at the municipal administration building, the group proceeded to the site, where a guided tour provided an in-depth look at the building and offered context on its history and former uses.
