Project: Detailed fatigue assessment of a steel bridge deck system using test data and monitoring measurements (Results)

The course trains PhD students in the field of application of advanced computational design techniques in the civil engineering design. In the course several advanced design methods will be presented, which are partly supported by computer simulations and on-site measurements or laboratory tests. The students after the course shall be able to apply advanced design methods, to evaluate large measurement databases and apply them in the design praxis. Additionally, the participating students will be encouraged to increase their personal competencies and transversal skills. 
The project will discuss the currently newest simulation techniques applicable in the detailed design of civil engineering structures, which are not commonly used in the daily praxis. Students will be trained in and discuss:

  • Numerical modelling techniques for advanced civil engineering problems;
  • FEM based design of bridges and modelling of advanced bridge erection methods;
  • Design and solutions for bridge monitoring systems;
  • Application of measurement data or test results in the design of steel structures; 
  • Improvement methods for Eurocode based design using numerical simulations and test results;
  • Numerical modelling technique of manufacturing methods (welding simulation);
  • Numerical modelling of atmospheric turbulence in CFD.

Pre-requisites

Students should have prior knowledge in structural design of steel and reinforced concrete structures, design of bridges or equivalent courses. Students should be familiar to the Eurocode based design of civil engineering structures, to the basics of structural design and to the basics of finite element method.

Mandatory english language knowledge requirement is Basic user A2 level.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

  • apply advanced computational modelling techniques applicable in the design;
  • use specialized advanced software tools and knowing their possibilities and limitations;
  • use test results or measurement data in the design of steel structures;
  • work in an international group and to practice their management, presentation and language skills.
