Institutes
The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism currently comprises two institutes: the Institute for European Urban Studies (IfEU) and the Bauhaus Institute for Experimental Architecture (bauhaus.ifex). These fields of research are dedicated to the faculty’s areas of research, which focus on issues relating to the sustainable development of architecture, cities and the landscape. An institute for research in architecture is currently being founded. The research focus ‘Planning.Construction.Heritage’ brings together research into heritage, housing and sustainability, as well as socio-ecological transformation and digital transformation. The faculty’s research projects are also linked to the International Heritage Centre (IHZ), which coordinates cross-faculty research, coursework and outreach in the field of cultural heritage. The institutes also collaborate in various ways with other partner institutions. Another institute, currently being established, will focus intensively on developing structures for research that emerges from architectural practice and can in turn have a direct impact on it. The goal is to establish a new area of research focus that has been lacking until now. The institute will coordinate and connect research in architecture and design.
Research Training Group 'Societal transformation and spatial materialization of housing'
The DFG Research Training Group ‘Societal transformation and spatial materialization of housing’ explores the constant and multifaceted transformation of housing from an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective. The Research Training Group is a joint facility of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. The programme currently comprises over 20 research fellows and an interdisciplinary academic staff drawing on the fields of geography, sociology and art history, as well as Urban Planning and Urban Design, landscape architecture, housing construction, infrastructure economics and Human-Computer Interaction.
Professorships
The Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism currently has 23 professorships, of which 4 are junior professorships and non-tenured professorships. In addition, there are 3 research groups and 4 honorary professorships. The professorships are responsible for coursework, research and the academic profile of their respective disciplines. Specific subject areas of relevance are further strengthened by the specialist departments. The honorary professorships contribute additional expertise to the faculty, particularly in terms of practical and applied knowledge.
Workshops and Labs
The Experimental Architecture Workshops (EWA) support the university’s teaching and research by effectively providing work environments, tools, and specialized knowledge. The integration of the workshops into the students’ curriculum is an integral part of the educational concept at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and is constantly evolving in line with the course content.
Dean's office
The dean's office manages the faculty’s affairs and coordinates its central matters. It ensures that the decisions of the Faculty Board are implemented, supports the organisation of studies and coursework, oversees examination and academic matters, and is responsible for the management of the faculty’s funds. Furthermore, it represents the faculty externally and, jointly with the dean, helps to ensure that the faculty’s duties are carried out reliably and in the interests of students and staff.
